Hematite
We find red to brown Amethyst when mining at the Diamond Willow also known as the Thunder Bay red cap or hematite capped, hematite is a combination of two minerals: amethyst, which is a purple variety of quartz, and hematite, which is an iron oxide specimen. These two minerals can occur naturally in some geological formations, or in some cases, intentionally combined. It is quite common for the under lying colours in the quartz banding to be purple or black colours and the crystal itself being different shades of red or brown. Here is a close up photo that was taken in August this year.
